The Livery

FOURTH OF JULY

This unique, antique 38 star flag flew on The Livery during Sunapee’s Sestercentennial, courtesy of Aaron Simpson. *The history of The Livery in Sunapee Harbor maybe found at: thelivery.org

Our nation’s flag had 38 stars when ground was broken for construction of Sunapee’s historic Livery in 1890. On July 4th, 1890, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Washington were accepted into the union and 5 stars were added.

The Livery was built as a horse stable to serve the needs of the adjacent Harbor House Hotel. In those days, access to Sunapee was primarily by train and steamboat. Visitors, once they arrived, had need for horses and carriages for hire.

“The beloved Livery is regarded as a symbol of the community and adapted with imagination and determination to serve the community in ever-changing ways”. James L. Garvin, NH State Architectural Historian.

LOCAL ARTIST DAY: Poet, Jane Kenyon

When the BHG Milestone Team is not helping our community with real estate transactions, we are trading books and sharing stories. This week, Marilyn sent me information about a local poet – and I am thrilled to share her with you!

Meet New Hampshire’s past poet laureate (January 1995-March 1999), Jane Kenyon. She published four volumes of poetry – From Room to Room (1978), The Boat of Quiet Hours (1986), Let Evening Come (1990), and Constance (1993). She was also a talented translator, publishing Twenty Poems of Anna Akmatova (1985).

Although Kenyon was born in Michigan, she called New Hampshire home in 1975 when she and her husband, poet Donald Hall, moved to his ancestral home in Wilmot. The property has been rescued and is being lovingly restored and managed by At Eagle Pond, Inc..

The film, A Life Together, celebrates the creative couple.

To truly know Jane Kenyon, one must experience her simple but emotionally resonant poetry. In the film, In Her Shoes, the character, Maggie, played by Cameron Diaz, is learning to read. To practice, she reads several poems – including Kenyon’s “Let Evening Come.”

New London Hospital - Commitment to Community

Many folks probably don’t know that New London Hospital was organized during the First World War.  It was in 1918 that the six-bed hospital opened to the public in the building which now houses Tracy Memorial Library.  About five years later, a completely new building offering 12-beds was erected on Main Street; today this building is known as the Griffin House Condominium Association.  The current site (a gift of 50 acres from a summer resident) and the original building on County Road were dedicated in 1958.  In 2007, expansion continued with a 46,000 square foot addition, which was completed in 2009. “Today, New London Hospital is accredited by the State of New Hampshire as a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital, providing primary care, emergency and specialized clinical services to the community it serves, continuing its rich tradition of quality service and caring.” For our area, the value of a caring, committed and involved local hospital cannot be over-estimated.
