Want to Honor Those Who Have Served our Country?

Sunapee Services will be held this Friday, May 24th.  The Brewster-Gould-Lee-Rollins Post 25 American Legion, Newport, will begin a Memorial Day service at Abbot Library at 8:10 a.m. for a World War I Memorial, 21 gun salute and Taps. At 8:30 a.m. the elementary school program will be held at the Sherburne Gymnasium with a 21 gun salute, Taps and cannon. At 9:45 a.m., a World War II Memorial will be held in Sunapee Harbor with a 21 gun salute, Taps and cannon. Springfield Services will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 26th, at the Pleasant View Cemetery with a salute to fallen Veterans.  The Kearsarge Regional Middle School Band will perform.  Conducted by members of American Legion Post 40 and Unit 40 of the American Legion Auxiliary. Newport Services will be held on Monday, May 27th.  At 7:45 a.m., the Veterans meet at the Veteran's Club and proceed to decorate the graves at the following cemeteries:  North Newport, Pine St. West, Pine St. East, Maple St., St. Patrick's, and Pine Grove.  Wreaths will be laid at the Newport High School, Haserlat Park, and the Sunapee St. Park.  A wreath will be placed in the Sugar River at the Brady Bridge, Oak St., for those lost at sea.  The rites include a firing squad and playing of Taps. At 11 a.m. a Memorial Day Program will be held at the Newport Common.  Captain Clay Couitt Jr. will give the Address of the Day and services will include firing the Post 25 cannon.  In case of inclement weather, services will be held at the Newport Opera House.
